Key factors when considering a move to digital data collection

GoReport work extensively across all aspects of the Commercial and Residential surveying sectors and have supported hundreds of clients as they have evolved through their adoption of digital data collection and reporting. This article discusses some of the key factors they have considered and addressed through their journeys.

First and foremost, if you are a surveyor that has not yet adopted digital data collection, you are clearly able and have been able to operate successfully using more traditional methods such as pen and paper, separate camera devices, desktop word processing etc. You have perhaps even been using dictation services and maybe even admin support or a third party for transcriptions services. So a valid question is “Why do I need digital data collection?”

The important thing is to remember that technology itself is an enabler. Any change to your workflow must start from the purpose of what you are trying to achieve and understanding the possibilities is a key first step in being able to define your purpose.

Most people will want to be efficient when performing a task. Personal and professional time is precious after all! Often, the difficulty is in being so busy “doing the job” that it is difficult to take the time to consider what technology options exist to be able to do it better. The first key factor when considering adopting digital is how to make time to evaluate your options.

Perhaps your goal is to deliver more surveys in a given day or week. It might be that you feel you do enough surveys but you want to wrestle back your personal time in the evenings and weekends rather than spending time on completing reports.

Whatever your motivation or incentive, adopting digital data collection will allow you to achieve it. The good news is, you don’t have to invest as much initial investigation time as you think. At GoReport for example, we aim to capture your imagination and provide a full understanding of the benefits in less than 1 hour.

Naturally, another key consideration for adopting digital is suitability of the solution to your specific needs. All surveyors want to ensure that the quality of their output and their ability to ensure their professional experience and skills are not compromised by any constraints in the technology they choose. For example, basic “form filling technologies” or generic data capture solutions that are not focused in the surveying world often lead the surveyor to compromise their requirements rather than the solution being designed to support a specific surveyors workflow. Fortunately, with an extensive range of clients in both the residential and commercial sectors, GoReport has a strong community of surveyors who are always ready to share their experiences and how they have adopted digital.

Finally, investment cost is always a consideration for any solution. For sole traders or small businesses, technology can be one of their biggest investments, whereas for larger practices or commercial surveying, staying within budget for all technology investments is a key. At GoReport, we believe that your investment should make sense as a “corporate capability” with a “digital first” mindset for your services. Whether you are a sole trader or a large enterprise, our pricing model reflects that the more you use our solution, the more cost effective it becomes and hence, the more value you drive from your investment. Essentially, your cost per survey reduces the more you use versus other pricing models that may charge “per click or report” which essential means your costs build the more you use the software.

Obviously, in order to gain confidence and certainty in adopting a digital solution, the first step is small and begins the journey of discovery. We will be delighted to discuss your challenges and the motivation of your business and share our experiences of helping many others in the surveying industry on their digital adoption journey.
